Driving authentic carriages

The Nederlandse Vereniging van Traditioneel Gerei (NVTG – Dutch Association of Traditional Carrages) is a member of the Koninklijke Nederlandse Hippische Sportfederatie (KNHS – Royal Dutch Equestrian Sports Federation).

The NVGT encourages driving and keeping the Dutch heritage of carriages, carts and sleds moving. By training jury members, the NVGT ensures the transfer and maintenance of the knowledge that is available about the carriages from the period from about 1850 to 1930.

This knowledge is used to give participating combinations the opportunity to be judged during a Traditional Tension Competition. Among other things, it is considered whether the condition of the vehicle corresponds to the age of the vehicle. The clothing of the coachman, grooms and passengers, the condition of the harnesses, the condition of the horse(s) and the condition of the herds are also examined. The primary concern is always the safety of the hitch; it is in such a condition that it is considered safe to participate in traffic.

About 20 organizations are active in the Netherlands that organize events (tour rides and/or qualifying competitions) for authentic equipment.
